FAQs

Below are the answers to some of the question you may have.  Please feel free to call us with any questions you may have.

What is the difference between the NRC (Novice Rider Course) and the IRC (Intermediate Rider Course)?
The Novice Rider Course (NRC)…formerly called the Beginner Rider Course (BRC) is tailored to provide the basic skills (both mental and physical) needed to ride safely.  Anyone 16 years or older, capable of riding a bicycle is welcome to register.  Knowledge of operating a manual transmission vehicle is helpful.  Students under the age of 18 years old will need to have an instructor witness a parent/guardian signature on a waiver before they are able to ride any of our motorcycles.  Consent will be given on the Waiver of Release of Liability.  All participants must sign a Waiver of Release of Liability.

The Intermediate Rider Course (IRC)…formerly called the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is a one-day class (typically held on a Saturday from 1 pm to 7 pm) giving participants an opportunity to improve riding skills on their own motorcycles.  Motorcycles must be in good working order and street legal.  Participants should have a minimum of 3000 miles and 90 days of riding experience, and have a motorcycle learner’s permit or endorsement to enroll.  Be prepared to show license and proof of insurance to the instructor.

How much are the classes?
Subsidized classes are $125.00 for Washington residents, $225 for out-of state students and $50.00 for WA residents under 18 years of age.
Non-Subsidized classes are $225.00 for all students.
The Department of Licensing sets aside money that is distribute across the state to contractors (like Columbia Motorcycle Training) to help bring down the cost of motorcycle training to the student.  This provides the price of $125 in our subsidized courses.  These courses tend to fill up quicker because of their reduced price.  We offer the Non-Subsidized class as a way to provide all students of a way to get the motorcycle training they desire for a shorter wait time.

When do I pay for class?
Payment will be taken when you register for class by Visa or MasterCard.  Check or Cash payments can be made by bringing them to the office or mailed in to the company address and MUST be made with 7 days of receiving your invoice to keep your space.
Any mailed payments are subject to “first come, first served” for our class list.
Please note:  No refunds will be made 10 business days from the start of the class!

What do I need for class?
You will need:

  • Helmet (we have a limited supply of helmets on hand)
  • Protective eyewear
  • Full-fingered leather gloves
  • Protective clothing (covering arms and legs that are reasonably form fitting, no baggy pants)
  • Sturdy footwear that cover the ankle
  • Water to keep you hydrated

You should dress for the weather and be prepared for inclement conditions.

*CLASSES WILL STILL COMMENCE REGARDLESS OF WEATHER (RAIN, SNOW, ETC.)

Do we furnish the bikes and what kind?
Yes, we supply the bikes, which are 500cc or smaller in the NRC (Novice Rider Course) but in the Intermediate Rider Course (IRC) you must provide your own motorcycle. Many different varieties may be available like Yamaha TW and XT 200, Honda Rebel 125, Kawasaki Eliminator.

Will I be endorsed for bikes above 350cc?
Yes. As of July 25, 1999 the state eliminated the different levels for Motorcycle endorsements. Now the only endorsement issued is the M3, which allows people to ride any size bike. However, people who currently have an endorsement with a M1 or M2 are still required to ride that size bike.

What does the class get me?
Upon successful completion of the Novice Rider Course (NRC) or Intermediate Rider Course (IRC), you will receive a Certificate of Completion. This Certificate is used to waive the entire motorcycle endorsement test. This waiver is only valid for 180 days following the completion of the NRC/IRC.

What happens if I have to cancel or don't show up for class?
Refunds are only authorized if you let us know at least 10 business days prior to the class. NO REFUNDS will be given   after this date.  Refunds will also not be given if you do not complete or pass the course.

Important note:  If you are counseled out by an Instructor because of a need for further instruction or drop on your own accord for any reason (and are recommended by that Instructor for a future class) the cost will be $125/$225 for the next class as well, yet you will be given priority for that class.  No refunds will be given if you fail the class or do not complete the course.

Can I get in to a class sooner than my scheduled date?
Yes, there are several ways you can attend a class sooner:

  • Come to the classroom on Friday evening of a scheduled class and be a stand-by student.  To do this you just show up before the 6 pm start and be available to take a spot left open by a student who fails to show.
  • Let us know you would like to be put on our waiting list (by phone or on your return invoice) to be called when an opening becomes available.  Priority will be given to students who are paid ahead of time.
  • Schedule in our Non-Subsidized classe...see our schedule for dates.

Make sure to dress appropriately and bring water/beverage (non-alcoholic) to keep yourself hydrated while out on the range.  We look forward to seeing you in class!
